The Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index Declines
Said Lynn Franco, director of economic indicators at The Conference Board: "Consumers' expectations retreated sharply in December resulting in a decline in the overall Index. The sudden turnaround in expectations was most likely caused by uncertainty surrounding the oncoming fiscal cliff. A similar decline in expectations was experienced in August of 2011 during the debt ceiling discussions." Read more>>

Cornerstone Research: Pace of FDIC Lawsuit Filings Increases in Q4 2012    

FDIC litigation activity associated with failed financial institutions has increased markedly in the fourth quarter of 2012, after a lull during the second and third quarters of the year, according to a report by Cornerstone Research. As of Dec. 7, the FDIC has filed 23 lawsuits in 2012 - compared with 16 in 2011 and two in 2010. Read more>>

OCC Highlights Risks Facing National Banks and Federal Savings Associations   

Key issues facing national banks and federal savings associations continue to involve the potential for banks to take excessive risk in an effort to improve profitability, revenue challenges from a slow economy and financial market volatility, and lingering effects of real estate lending. Equifax: Consumer Credit Levels Up 30 Percent   

According to Equifax's latest National Consumer Credit Trends Report, consumer credit originated year-to-date through September 2012 has increased nearly 30 percent to $675 billion from $523 billion during the same timeframe in 2010. Comparatively, credit originations today are below the 2006-2007 pre-recession levels of about $1 trillion by about one-third. Read more>>

FDIC Releases Community Banking Study, Supervisory Initiatives    

FDIC Chairman Martin Gruenberg said, "Today's release [of the study] is an important step to better understand and respond to the challenges community banks face in the financial marketplace. This will be an ongoing effort. We will continue to look for other opportunities to enhance our research and analysis as well as identify other steps to improve the examination and rulemaking process for community banks, while maintaining our supervisory standards."
