American Institute of Architects Communities by Design – The AIA’s Communities by Design is a clearinghouse for technical assistance programs and resources supports better quality of life and community sustainability.

Building Green – BuildingGreen, LLC is an independent company committed to providing accurate, unbiased and timely information designed to help building-industry professionals and policy makers improve the environmental performance and reduce the adverse impacts, of buildings.

Center for Livable Communities – The Center for Livable Communities is a national initiative of the Local Government Commission (LGC) a nonprofit, nonpartisan, membership organization of elected officials, city and county staff, and other interested individuals throughout California and other states. The Center helps local governments and community leaders be proactive in their land use and transportation planning, and adopt programs and policies that lead to more livable and resource-efficient land use patterns.

Center for Neighborhood Technology – This group promotes the development of more livable and sustainable communities. It strives to recognize, preserve and enhance the hidden value of assets and undervalued resources inherent in the urban environment.

Center for Rural Affairs – The Center for Rural Affairs, established in 1973 as an unaffiliated nonprofit corporation, works to strengthen small businesses, family farms and ranches, and rural communities. The Center has evolved into one of the nation’s leading rural organizations known for our pioneering work to rebuild rural America and our national work to reform federal policy.

Clean Water Action – Clean Water Action is a national organization of diverse people and groups working together for clean water – assuring supplies of clean, safe and affordable water for all Americans, now and for the future; protecting health – preventing health-threatening pollution at its source; creating jobs – building an economy based on environmentally safe jobs and businesses; and making democracy work – empowering people to take charge of our environmental future.

Climate and Rural Energy Development Center – The Washington State University Energy Program established the Climate Change and Rural Development Center to strengthen its position as an advocate for climate protection. Activities include participating in the Climate Protection Stakeholder Process initiated by the Puget Sound Clean Air Agency, a four-county air pollution control authority; participating in the West Coast Governors' Climate Change Initiative; and providing Washington State Energy Code support for new residential construction.

Climate Business Network – The Climate Business Network provides a forum through which the ‘community’ surrounding the Climate Convention can examine and take advantage of the emerging business opportunities primarily provided by the ‘project-based mechanisms’ (the Clean Development Mechanism [CDM] & Joint Implementation [JI]) of the Kyoto Protocol.)

Climate Registry, The – The Climate Registry is a collaboration between states, provinces and tribes aimed at developing and managing a common greenhouse gas emissions reporting system with high integrity that is capable of supporting various greenhouse gas emission reporting and reduction policies for its member states and tribes and reporting entities.

Climate Solutions – Climate Solutions’ mission is to accelerate practical and profitable solutions to global warming by galvanizing leadership, growing investment and bridging divides.

Congress for the New Urbanism – The Congress for the New Urbanism promotes walkable, neighborhood-based development as an alternative to sprawl. CNU takes a proactive, multi-disciplinary approach to restoring our communities.

Department of Energy Smart Communities – This website has good information, resources and links on how to help your community become more sustainable.

EPA’s Green Communities – The U.S Environmental Protection Agency provides a toolkit for Green Communities, built around a five-step planning process. In each step, the toolkit provides strategic guidance and links to resources, case studies model codes and tools.

Enterprise Community Partners’ Green Communities – Green Communities is the first national green building program developed for affordable housing. It focuses on the use of environmentally sustainable materials, reduction of negative environmental impacts and increased energy efficiency. It also emphasizes designs and materials that safeguard the health of residents and locations that provide easy access to services and public transportation.

Environmental Protection Agency Smart Growth – This website is a good entry point for information on Smart Growth.

Green Business Alliance – Green Business Alliance assists businesses to understand what it means to be green, identifying attainable objectives and then implementing more environmentally responsible business practices. Its mission is to help integrate environmental stewardship into daily business practices.

Green Communities Projects by State – This page on the Green Communities provides an alphabetical list of states, with links to specific green projects.

Green Playbook – The Playbook is a web-based resource that provides strategies, tips and tools that cities and counties can use to take immediate action on climate change through green building, green neighborhoods and sustainable infrastructure. The Playbook is designed both for communities that are considering making the first steps toward these, as well as for those who want to take existing efforts to a new level.

Mayors Institute on City Design – The Mayors' Institute on City Design (MICD) is a partnership program of the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Architectural Foundation and the United States Conference of Mayors. Since 1986, the Mayors' Institute has helped transform communities through design by preparing mayors to be the chief urban designers of their cities.

NRCS National Water and Climate Center – The mission of the National Resources Conservation Service’s Water and Climate Center is to lead the development and transfer of water and climate information and technology which support natural resource conservation.

National Energy Center for Sustainable Communities – The NECSC is dedicated to the pursuit of research, demonstration and capacity-building initiatives that enable development professionals to build profitable and sustainable communities, defined as “communities that consume energy, water and material resources in the most sustainable manner possible while maximizing productivity, security and prosperity, and while minimizing the release of greenhouse gases, solid waste and regulated pollutants to the local and global environment.”

Natural Resources Defense Council – NRDC provides some good resources on Smart Growth, air quality, water and global warming.

Next Generation Earth – This site is sponsored by the Earth Institute at Columbia University. It’s an excellent resource for state-by-state climate information and general climate change facts.

Pew Center on Global Climate Change – The Pew Center on Global Climate Change was established in 1998 as a non-profit, non-partisan and independent organization. The Center's mission is to provide credible information, straight answers and innovative solutions in the effort to address global climate change.

Progressive States Network – Progressive States Network aims to transform the political landscape by sparking progressive actions at the state level. The group provides coordinated research and strategic advocacy tools to state legislators and their staffs, empowering these decision-makers with everything they need to engineer forward-thinking change. Progressive States also works with non-profits and a variety of constituent groups to build support for coordinated progressive policy.

Project for Public Spaces – This organization encourages the creation, preservation and enhancement of great public spaces, from streets, parks and small squares to major public plazas.

Resolution Fund, LLC – The mission of the Resolution Fund is to be the global leader in strategic training, policy consulting and public-private partnering for rapid, resilient renewal of communities, regions and natural resources. Resolution Fund provides educational workshops to help communities get started in the restoration economy.

Smart Growth America – This coalition of national, state and local partners “supports citizen-driven planning that coordinates development, transportation, revitalization of older areas and preservation of open space and the environment.”

Smart Growth Leadership Institute – Smart Growth America and partners provide this site to help state and local elected, civic and business leaders with training, implementation strategies, and technical assistance. Available on the site is the Smart Growth Implementation Toolkit.

Smart Growth Online – This is one of the best sites for Smart Growth information in the United States. Much of this information is applicable to green neighborhoods.

Sustainable Communities Network – This site links citizens to resources and to one another to create healthy, vital, sustainable communities.

USGS National Climate Change Assessment: Western United States – This website page contains a detailed analysis on the climate change impact on the Western states.

U.S. Green Building Council – The USGBC has developed a rating system for neighborhoods: LEED for Neighborhood Development (LEED ND). It and related resources are available on its website. Developed by the USGBC with the Congress for the New Urbanism and the Natural Resources Defense Council, the rating system is being piloted in 2007, and has had widespread uptake by developers and local governments.

The Urban Land Institute – ULI has a Smart Growth Alliance program to create partnerships in support of Smart Growth, and Smart Growth News, a monthly e-newsletter of related information.
