Colin Barrett Assumes Top Executive Position at Tennessee Bankers Association

Nov 4 - Colin Barrett is the new president of the Tennessee Bankers Association, assuming the position Nov. 1, following a year-long transition plan put into effect by the organization’s board of directors.

Barrett previously was TBA executive vice president, responsible for government relations work in Nashville and Washington as well as member relations with the 216 banks operating in Tennessee. He joined the association in 2005 as director of member services after working with the American Bankers Association in Washington, D.C., as regional membership manager, where he was responsible for coordinating grassroots efforts throughout the country.

“The Tennessee Bankers Association is extremely lucky to be able to appoint our new president in-house and have it be someone with Colin’s understanding of and commitment to the organization,” said TBA Chairman Jeffrey D. Agee, president and CEO of  First Citizens National Bank in Dyersburg. “This truly is a seamless transition of leadership, drawing on Colin’s experience here and at the ABA, and on the relationships he has already built with many of our member banks through his involvement in membership services. He has been a key player on our government relations team, and he has been an effective advocate for our industry at both the state and federal levels.”

Barrett succeeds longtime TBA executive Bradley L. Barrett, his father, who last year announced his retirement effective Oct. 31. Brad Barrett first joined TBA in 1973 as assistant manager and director of education and was named president in 1992.

Colin Barrett earned an M.A. degree in political management from George Washington University and his undergraduate degree in marketing from the University of Tennessee. After graduating from UT, he was a development associate and endowment director at the YMCA of Middle Tennessee.

In 2003, he was regional development manager for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, serving in this position under U.S. Sen. George Allen, R-Va. In this position, he coordinated and managed a nationwide fundraising program with U.S. senators.

Additionally, he serves as a member of the newly formed Tennessee State University Economics and Finance Advisory Board, which helps prepare students for jobs in the banking industry, and as chairman of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee’s Center for Civic Engagement, which teaches young people the importance of political involvement through the Model United Nations and Youth Legislature programs. Barrett is on the board of the YMCA Blue Ridge Assembly, a nonprofit, tax-exempt conference and leadership training center owned by the YMCAs of the 10 Southeastern states, and spends a week each summer serving as a facilitator for the YMCA Christian Values Conference in Black Mountain, N.C.

Colin lives in Nashville with his wife, Rachel, and their two-year-old son, William.
