Cardinal Bank Launches Student-Run School Bank in Fairfax County, Virginia

June 5 - Cardinal Bank has announced the opening of a new student-run elementary school bank in Fairfax County. The opening activities for the "Oakton Panther Bank" at Oakton Elementary School were held Thursday, April 24, 2014. Dr. Fabio E. Zuluaga, Assistant Superintendent-Cluster VIII, and Oakton Elementary Assistant Principal, Keith Eck, Fairfax County Public Schools, joined Cardinal Bank President, F. Kevin Reynolds, student banking officers and guests for the event.

Using Cardinal’s award-winning school bank model, Oakton fifth graders applied for job positions with the student-run bank, which is open one day a week from 7:45AM – 8:15 a.m. Cardinal Bank employees assist the students with their banking transactions, and oversee operations at the deposit-only bank.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to educate students about money management and good savings skills," said F. Kevin Reynolds, Cardinal Bank President. "Our school partnerships provide a workplace experience for students to learn skills in leadership, marketing and serving others. These partnerships lay the groundwork for long-term financial relationships, and help teach our young customers real-life business values that will give them a great foundation for the future."

Cardinal Bank’s highly-praised school bank program provides young students with hands-on experience in basic financial management, and offers insight into career opportunities in the financial services industry. Cardinal operates school banks in partnership with elementary and middle schools in Fairfax, Prince William, and Loudoun counties in Virginia. The bank’s commitment to financial literacy extends to the high school level through its sponsorship of the innovative EverFi learning platform.
