The World That Apps Built

By: Kari English

As the world increasingly becomes smartphone-centric, apps are becoming more ingrained into our daily lives. At the end of 2011, there were more than 400 smartphone devices on the market in the United States, according to the 2011 comScore study, “2012 Mobile Future in Focus.” And 64 percent of mobile phone time is spent on apps, according to the 2012 Nielsen study, “The Digital Revolution: A Look Through The Marketer’s Lens.” In just the last year, the average number of apps per smartphone has jumped 28 percent, from 32 apps to 41, according to NielsenWire. Not only is the 2012 smartphone owner downloading more apps, Nielsen noted, but they are also increasingly spending more time using them vs. using the mobile web — about 10 percent more than last year.

There are apps for everything from organization to education, from entertainment to business — even banking. With that in mind, I have compiled a list of potentially useful apps for bankers and their customers. For example, an app from Calcubot turns a financial institution’s Facebook page into a lead-generation system. aMobile from Aptys enables banks’ business customers to create invoices, accept payments and process invoices directly through a mobile phone or tablet device. LenderMobile offers an app that loan agents and borrowers can use to fill-in, sign and submit loan applications and custom disclosures directly from their iPads. And the Remote Deposit Anywhere app from ProfitStars touts its ability to help banks and credit unions retain and attract new customers and members by expanding the available deposit channels. And let’s not forget, there is also the BankNews app available for download so bankers can read each issue of their favorite magazine on their iPhones or iPads.
