Lost and Stolen Information: The Plague of the 21st Century

April 4 - From 2005 to 2011, the Identity Theft Resource Center identified 3,154 information or data breaches in the United States, putting nearly 511 million consumer records at risk of theft, fraud or other malicious activity. This averages out to 1.4 security breaches affecting 233,329 consumer records each day during the six-year period.

While these numbers may seem shocking, many organizations continue to leave themselves vulnerable to possible attacks. These institutions are lured into false confidence by assuming outdated protections leave them safe, hackers are not attracted to small businesses or “it won’t happen to me.” To assist companies in building stronger security for their clients’ data, ATTUS Technologies Inc., an affiliate of Computer Services Inc., has published a white paper outlining:

  • Statistics and analysis on industries at risk.
  • Various threats and breach types.
  • Potential warning signs of an attack.
  • Consequences of an attack.
  • Real-world examples of past attacks on various organizations.
  • How to protect against potential attacks.
