April 2 - Wilbur-Ellis Company, a recognized leader in crop production technology and the distribution and marketing of plant protection, seed and nutritional products, has been on an M&A spree, acquiring three companies in March.
The company has acquired the assets of Orchard (Neb.) Fertilizer Service Inc. Orchard Fertilizer Service is a full-service ag retail business that has been serving growers in North-Central Nebraska for more than 50 years.
Wilbur-Ellis believes that the acquisition will make the company more competitive in the Nebraska market and provide growth opportunities for seed and other crop inputs. Wilbur-Ellis also plans to introduce local growers to the Wilbur-Ellis branded portfolio of products, and various product and technology experts in the company. Wilbur-Ellis already has a presence in Nebraska and in neighboring states, which includes several aerial application hubs.
The company also acquired the assets of S&S Agricultural Supply L.L.C., a high-value, service-focused agronomy business in Watervliet, Mich. The acquisition is a strategic fit to Wilbur-Ellis’ existing Watervliet business. The company will use the expansion to provide better value and resources for growers in Southwest Michigan.
The company also plans to introduce more growers to AgVerdict, a comprehensive interactive online system for generating, tracking, reporting and managing crop production supported by Wilbur-Ellis’ agronomic experts. It also sees sales opportunities in plant protection and other Wilbur-Ellis branded products, as well as opportunities to provide its existing customer base with dry-blend fertilizers.
Founded in 1985, S&S Agricultural Supply is known to have a strong team of crop advisers, efficient service and lasting customer relationships.
Also in March, Wilbur-Ellis acquired the assets of Chester Farm Service Corp. Located in Chester, S.D., Chester Farm Service has been providing seed, seed treatment, fertilizer, plant protection and custom application services to local farmers for more than 40 years.
The acquisition fits strategically with Wilbur-Ellis’ existing business in South Dakota, and it aligns with the company’s growth objectives. The Chester location will allow Wilbur-Ellis to expand sales in fertilizer, plant protection, and other Wilbur-Ellis branded products to the area. The location will also be supported by Wilbur-Ellis’ Huron, S.D., aerial application business.
Chester Farm Service is known by local growers to have vast knowledge and expertise in seed. The company is also a role model for its environmental, health and safety standards.
