Rural Mainstreet Economy Still in Recession: Annualized Job Losses Exceed 5%

Nov 20 – For a third straight month the overall index for the Rural Mainstreet economy expanded, but continued to indicate significant economic weakness, according to the November survey of bank CEOs in an 11-state region. The Rural Mainstreet Index, which ranges between 0 and 100, advanced to 38.4 from October’s 37.5 and September’s 36.5. A reading of 50.0 is considered growth neutral.

Check Imaging: Iowa’s Bridge Community Bank Finds Big Savings in Item-Processing Costs and Courier Fees

Bridge Community Bank, founded in 1903 and employee-owned, has $52 million in assets and locations in Mount Vernon and Mechanicsville, Iowa. After growing tired of using microfilm to index checks, resulting in hours of labor-intensive researching, Bridge Community Bank officials decided to investigate check imaging. They began debating the benefits of check imaging versus original checks for customers. In addition, they searched for microfilm savings and personnel savings related to customer research, item sorting and statement preparation.
